TOUR: Charming Orang Utan Island + Penang City Tour (Full-Day by SUV)
We had an excellent tour with Lawrence. He was very knowledgeable about the area. His car was extremely comfortable for 4 adults. When we got to the Orangutan island he told us all their names and gave us a really good talk on them. We had some really good conversations with him in the car on the way there and back, and felt very much like we were having a day out with a friend. It was great fun. To finish, he took us to the chew jetty for some very tasty street food. Thank you so much.

Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation, Perak
Tucked away in the scenic landscapes of Perak, Malaysia, the Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation stands as a beacon of conservation and research, devoted to safeguarding and rehabilitating one of the world’s most endangered primates—the orangutan. Established in 2000, the foundation occupies a 35-acre island in the heart of Bukit Merah Lake, designed to replicate the animals’ natural rainforest environment.
The sanctuary provides a haven for orangutans rescued from captivity, illegal wildlife trade, and habitat destruction. With expert veterinary care, carefully planned enrichment programs, and a strong focus on rehabilitation, the ultimate mission is to prepare these great apes for possible reintroduction into the wild. Beyond rescue and rehabilitation, the center actively contributes to global research, partnering with international specialists to study orangutan behavior, ecology, and genetics.
Visitors to Orang Utan Island are given a rare opportunity to encounter these remarkable animals in a semi-natural setting. Guided tours allow guests to observe the orangutans up close while learning about their unique biology, the challenges they face, and the conservation measures being undertaken. Educational initiatives and interactive exhibits further highlight issues such as deforestation, the palm oil industry’s impact, and the importance of adopting sustainable practices.
As one of Malaysia’s foremost wildlife sanctuaries, the Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation represents a deep commitment to protecting biodiversity. Blending science, education, and eco-tourism, it inspires visitors to take part in the global effort to conserve orangutans—affectionately known as the “men of the forest” (orang hutan in Malay)—and to preserve the rainforests they call home.
Whether you plan a visit or choose to support their mission, every contribution helps secure a future for these gentle and extraordinary creatures.
