Trishaw or Beca in Penang

The trishaw, locally known as "beca" in Malaysia, is one of Penang’s most iconic and charming modes of transportation. A three-wheeled pedal cycle with a sidecar, the beca was once a common way to navigate the bustling streets of George Town. Today, while modern vehicles dominate, the trishaw remains a beloved cultural symbol, offering tourists a nostalgic and leisurely way to explore the city’s UNESCO-listed heritage sites.  

Decorated with vibrant flowers, colourful umbrellas, and sometimes even flashing lights, Penang’s trishaws are a moving work of art. The drivers, often elderly men with deep local knowledge, double as tour guides, sharing stories of George Town’s history, colonial architecture, and famous street art. Riding a beca is not just about transportation—it’s an immersive cultural experience, allowing visitors to soak in the sights, sounds, and slower pace of old-world Penang.  

Though no longer a primary means of transport, the trishaw plays a vital role in preserving Penang’s heritage and supporting local livelihoods. A beca ride is a must-try for anyone visiting the island, blending tradition, tourism, and the enduring charm of a bygone era.
