Malaysia’s Mountain Resort City in the Clouds
Perched high on the forested peaks of the Titiwangsa Range, Genting Highlands is one of Malaysia’s most distinctive destinations. Known for its cool climate, integrated resorts, entertainment complexes, and casinos, it attracts millions of visitors annually from Malaysia and abroad. Often referred to as the “City of Entertainment,” Genting Highlands combines natural mountain scenery with large-scale leisure infrastructure, creating a unique contrast between rainforest landscapes and modern tourism development.
Location and Geography
Genting Highlands lies along the border of the states of Pahang and Selangor, approximately 45 kilometers northeast of Kuala Lumpur. Situated at an elevation of about 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level, the area forms part of the central spine of Peninsular Malaysia, known as the Titiwangsa Mountains.
The terrain is steep and heavily forested, consisting of tropical montane rainforest. The high altitude gives rise to misty conditions, lush vegetation, and panoramic views over the lowlands. On clear days, visitors can see vast stretches of forest and even distant urban areas. However, the landscape is often enveloped in clouds, contributing to its well-known “above the clouds” experience.
History
The development of Genting Highlands is closely tied to the vision of Lim Goh Tong, a Malaysian businessman who conceptualized a hill resort with a casino in the 1960s. Inspired by the cooler climates of mountain resorts abroad, he sought to create a similar retreat in Malaysia.
Construction began in 1965 under challenging conditions, including difficult terrain and limited infrastructure. The project required building access roads through dense jungle and steep slopes. Despite skepticism, the resort officially opened in 1971, marking the establishment of Malaysia’s only legal land-based casino.
Over the decades, Genting Highlands expanded significantly under Genting Group, evolving into a large integrated resort complex now known as Resorts World Genting. Continuous upgrades have introduced theme parks, shopping malls, hotels, and entertainment venues, keeping it relevant in a competitive tourism market.
Weather and Climate
One of the main attractions of Genting Highlands is its cool and refreshing climate. Temperatures typically range between 15°C and 25°C, significantly lower than the lowland tropical heat of Malaysia.
The high altitude results in frequent cloud cover, mist, and occasional rain throughout the year. Humidity remains high, and sudden weather changes are common. Visitors should expect cool breezes, especially in the evenings, and light jackets are often necessary. The climate is particularly appealing for those seeking relief from the heat of cities like Kuala Lumpur.
Places of Interest
Genting Highlands offers a wide variety of attractions catering to families, couples, and leisure travelers.
SkyWorlds Theme Park
A major highlight is Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park, an outdoor theme park featuring movie-inspired rides and immersive zones. The park is divided into themed areas, including Central Park, Liberty Lane, and Andromeda Base, each offering distinct attractions.
Visitors can experience high-adrenaline roller coasters, interactive rides, and cinematic environments based on popular film franchises. The park is designed with modern queue systems and digital integration, improving visitor flow and reducing waiting times.
Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park
For all-weather entertainment, Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park provides a vibrant indoor amusement experience. Located within the First World Plaza, it features a wide range of rides suitable for all age groups.
The park includes family-friendly attractions, spinning rides, and small roller coasters. Its brightly lit environment, combined with music and visual effects, creates a lively atmosphere that is unaffected by the often unpredictable mountain weather.
SkyAvenue Shopping Area
SkyAvenue is the resort’s primary retail and lifestyle hub—this modern shopping complex houses international brands, specialty stores, entertainment outlets, and dining options.
The architecture is contemporary, with large digital displays and open spaces enhancing the visitor experience. SkyAvenue also serves as a central connector between various attractions, making it a key gathering point within Resorts World Genting.
The Cable Car Systems
One of the most scenic ways to reach Genting Highlands is via the Genting Skyway and the newer Awana SkyWay.
The Awana SkyWay is particularly notable for its modern gondola system, offering panoramic views of the rainforest below. The journey spans approximately 2.8 kilometers and takes around 10 minutes. Glass-floor gondolas are available for an enhanced viewing experience.
Midway along the route, the cable car stops at Chin Swee Station, allowing visitors to explore the temple complex before continuing to the summit.
Chin Swee Temple
Chin Swee Caves Temple is a Taoist temple perched on a rocky hillside along the cable car route. Built in honor of a revered monk, it features traditional Chinese architecture, statues, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the valley. The temple offers a quiet and contemplative contrast to the busy resort environment.
